Make a wish / Pede um desejo

 Nota: Versão portuguesa mais abaixo

I had a birthday recently and I was asked (repeatedly) what I wished for the next year. When I claimed I didn’t wish for anything in particular people found it hard to believe, they thought I was being mysterious or secretive about it.

A couple days ago I got a fun gift, a cute notebook to take notes about “100 things I want to accomplish, create, learn, share, improve, see, fight for, experience and organize”, I basically only need 10 things for each category and yet it’s surprising how hard it is to come up with ideas.

I live in the constant struggle of being focused on the future while dwelling on the past, while finding extremely difficult to be in the present, but while I fantasize about what could be, those are not necessarily things I wish for. In fact, some are things I don’t want to happen at all.

Fantasizing is an escape, but it is also a way to experience parallel realities, to test limits, imagine how I would react to different scenarios, process emotions and experiences, reflect about life’s meaning and my purpose in this world. The good thing about having a wild imagination is that, one, you come up with so many scenarios, that you don’t get attached to any in particular and two, some of them are so unrealistic that you don’t really expect them to become true anyway. To it allows you to low off some steam, it allows you to expel some energy and frustrations and fears, but it doesn’t set up expectations so high that make anything else unpleasant.

So what this experience has taught me, both being asked about my wishes and trying to fill in that notebook, is that I don’t really have many wishes, at least not concrete ones. I’m open to many experiences, I hope I get to keep on traveling and cross my path with inspiring people, just like I hope I keep growing and finding my place in the world, but I don’t have a detailed idea on what that means, what that looks like. I don’t wish to go here or there, because what I really want is to go everywhere. I don’t want to meet a particular person or group of people, because there are so many that are worth knowing. Everyday I discover news things I want to grow at, and when it comes to my place in the world… more and more I’m finding it’s about the journey.

So other than the obvious, health and peace for everyone (which I know is already asking a lot, but not in my control), I don’t really wish for anything. I’ll take what it comes and try to make the best of it.

I am what I am / Sou o que sou

 Nota: Versão portuguesa mais abaixo.

Are the skills that define us things that we were born with, or consequences of the life we have lived so far?

Are these features everyone thinks are so natural to us really innate, or are they things we were forced to learn to develop over time?

Recently I was talking to a colleague about people’s mindsets and characteristics and she made think about the questions above. There’s so much about ourselves we think is by default, that we believe is who we are and cannot change, but what if some of them are self-defense mechanisms we’ve developed to survive?

Maybe people who seem calm and collected aren’t so naturally, maybe they’re so anxious and troubled all the time that out of self-preservation they had to learn coping mechanisms.

Perhaps people who seem optimistic aren’t naturally so, maybe they’re just so aware of all the ways things can go wrong all the time, that to keep their sanity they had to learn to focus on the good, not to be swallow by the darkness.

What about people who do well under pressure? Are they truly unafraid, or are they just so used to live in constant panic that their baseline became too high?

Then we have people who are kind and empathetic. Were they really born that way, or have they been hurt so much that they can’t be oblivious to other people’s pain?

What if people who are joyful and smile constantly aren’t so naturally? What if they had to learn to embrace the darkness that surrounds them and enjoy the glimpses of happiness they find here or there?

It’s easier to think that certain skills come easier to others, it’s easier to look around and assume others are lucky to have things come so automatically, but is it really so?

Sure, we are different, and our personalities are a combo of internal and external factors, but maybe it’s also easier to say we are who we are, to settle, and just blame it on the skills we were not blessed with. But does that help us in the long run? Does it really make things easier?

Sure, it’s easier to complain, to blame it on nature or even our upbringing, than to admit that we don’t try enough, that we don’t put enough effort on it. Yes, nature and childhood have a brutal impact in who we become, but it can’t be an excuse for everything.

Change is hard, learning skills, alter behavior is challenging and tiring, but what if it’s worth it?

What if there are skills, things about us, that we can work on, that we can improve that make life less hard and more enjoyable? What if we stop comparing ourselves to others, and use them as inspiration instead? What if, even if we never become naturals at certain skills, we can at least get better at them?

Being stuck to a pattern that keeps us in the same vicious circle… is that really an easy more enjoyable way to live life?

Another trip around the sun / Mais uma volta em torno do sol

Nota: Versão portuguesa mais abaixo.

As a kid I had so many certainties about the future. I knew exactly where I wanted to be at a certain age, I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, I knew exactly the kind of person I wanted to become. Back then, it was never about the what, or when, or where, or if… it was just a matter of how. How will I get there?

Later in life, when I was hit with the cold strike of reality, when I was drowning in self-doubt and philosophical questions, I figured growing older would eventually give me some clarity.

I tried to be patient (which I’m not very good at), I waited desperately, year after year, for the answers to come, for the choices to become easier, for life to become simpler…. Until I realized that not only, I wasn’t getting any closer to figuring out my future or the people around me, I wasn’t even getting any closer to figuring out myself.

If back in the day, things were unequivocal, straightforward and obvious, because I, myself, was rigid and dogmatic, as I began to force myself to say yes to opportunities, to try new things, to expand myself as a human being, the horizon became wider. Slowly what I started to understand was that there was so much I didn’t know about the world, about myself, that there was no way I can chose one single path with any certainty.

In an interesting twist, it suddenly dawned on me that I might not be any closer of finding out where I wanted to go, what I wanted to do, or even who I wanted to be… but I sure was more certain about what I didn’t want to do, who I didn’t want to be with and whom I didn’t want to be.

At first glance, it might seem disappointing, those certainties may feel useless or limited, but they’re the exact opposite. Knowing what you do not want allows you to be open for a wider range of opportunities while still remaining true to yourself. The problem with knowing for sure what you want is that you become narrow minded, you make choices based on who you were in the past while you may in fact have evolved into someone else. Being sure of what you want, in a way, can bind you to strict goals, can limit your progress so, what I’ve been finding out is that knowing what I do not want may be a good place to start. It helps me to have an idea of what I might want, with the flexibility of knowing that can change.

In this process I’ve rediscovered my core values, those that throughout the years have not changed, those I believe it’s important to hold on to. I’ve also learned that instead of fighting the parts of me that frustrate me, or in the other extreme settle based on my limitations, I can work on them, at my on pace, at my own will.

So, what exactly do I now know I don’t want?

I know I don’t want to walk around angry, not to myself, nor with the ones around me. It takes me an extraordinary load of energy just to cope with life in a regular bases, doing it angry, makes everything 100x harder;

I know I don’t want to be in the center of conflict, but I don’t to be a doormat or Switzerland either. I know who I am and what I stand for, there are certain matters I can’t (nor do I want to) be neutral, but I must learn to pick my battles;

I know I don’t want to be the dark cloud in a room. There’s so much in this world that is wrong and messed up, it’s so instinctively to clap back and criticize and state the obvious, but I want to learn to take the higher road while still protecting my sanity. I want to learn to see things from different perspectives, I want to try and fix things, if possible, but I also want learn to move on.

I know I don’t want to be surrounded by toxic people, people who drain my energy or refuse to get out of vicious circles. Therefore, I’m looking to surround myself with people you are conscious, but also kind and positive, smart and inspiring, people who bring out the best of me, but also give their best to the world.

I know I don’t want negative experiences to be in vain, but I also don’t want them to define me. Challenging situations (or people) have the power to shape us, but it doesn’t have to be in a negative form. Each interaction we have (good or bad) brings out new sides of us and that can be an interesting way of expanding myself as a person.

I know I don’t want to ever stop learning and I don’t ever want to feel that I’m wiser or better just because I’m older than someone else. Tranquility and wisdom may come with age, but it doesn’t happen automatically, you have to work on it, you have to take the time, to prioritize, to be willing.

I know I don’t want to lose my humanity or stop seeing people as human beings. I don’t ever want to intentionally hurt others or be the cause of any pain. Though I know inadvertently that will for sure at some point happen, I hope to always be mindful of the impact my words and actions have on others.

I know I don’t want to become self-absorbed. I don’t want to forget to check on my friends, to celebrate other people’s successes and joys, to focus on the little pleasures of life.

Even though I was always an old soul, I did go through a twisted Peter Pan syndrome phase back in my teenage years, where I didn’t refuse the responsibilities or commitments that came with growing older, but I certainly didn’t welcome them either. Interestingly enough, the older I get the less that seems to weight on me. Maybe it’s because the more I observe people, women in particular, the more I realize that the ones who are not afraid or ashamed of their age, who don’t try to deny it, but instead embrace it, are the ones who seem happier, freer and more fulfilled.

Embracing your age, just like embracing any other part of yourself, will make you feel more comfortable, and “once you’re comfortable with yourself you learn to be more at ease with others.” (Stana Katic)

Sei que não quero passar a vida zangada, com o mundo, com os outros ou comigo mesma. Viver a vida já exige de mim uma quantidade tremenda de energia, fazê-lo zangada dificulta tudo 100 vezes mais;

Sei que não quero estar no centro de conflitos, mas também não quero que abusem de mim, nem tão pouco quero ser a Suíça. Sei quem sou e o que defendo, há certos assuntos em que não posso (nem quero) ser neutra, mas há que escolher as batalhas;

(Stana Katic)
