Choices/Escolhas

Nota: Versão portuguesa mais abaixo

People walk around like they have everything figured out, like they know what they’re doing, but in reality very little are that sure of where they’re headed… They may feel certain, but a lot of that certainty fades away when suddenly the option for a detour comes along.

Detours - the unpredictable choices that can come at the most unexpected times and have the power to change the route of a lifetime. Yes, life is made of choices, some well-planned and thought through and others that you make in the heat of the moment...

We’ve all heard it say “don’t make decisions when you are upset, sad, jealous or in love”, but aren’t exactly those the times when everyone wants to make them? When they want to change? It is easy to say give it time, think carefully, but people are  afraid every time they don’t make a decision they’re wasting a portion of their life living it in a way they don’t want to. People are afraid that by not making a choice they are choosing the wrong road.

People go through life on automatic mode – they go to work, they go home, they ran their errands, they eat, they sleep and then the next day they start all over again. And in the commotion of everyday, sometimes they forget to nurture their relationships. It doesn’t necessarily means they don’t care about each other, or that they don’t value the ones they love it is just easy to get sucked into the everyday craziness and take what they have for granted.

There are so many layers to each of us, more than we can even recognize, and as if that wasn’t enough we add some masks. There are very little people who simply are who they are, who are open books, at least full time. When trouble strikes and doubt hovers it is very hard not to go into hiding. Masks don’t exist necessarily because people want to deceive each other, a lot of times they’re the result of our human instinct. Sometimes people use them to protect themselves, sometimes they used them to protect the ones they love.

That’s the thing about choices and decisions, they rarely affect only the person making them. Everything we do and everything we are has the power to impact people around us, and that knowledge is what sometimes prevents people to take a leap.

Which brings us back to the masks. People put on their masks in order to be able to keep up with everyday life, to push forward on the planned route, to try to avoid the detours and honour their responsibilities, but while their hiding their needs from others (sometimes even from themselves) they break the connection, the one thing they truly need. Gaps start widening, people get more vulnerable and that’s when often they see themselves faced with temptation.

That’s when everything gets tricky, that’s when sometimes good people make the wrong call, that’s when people can get hurt or hurt someone unintentionally.

They say make the choices that make you happy. The challenge is knowing which ones truly will.

Escolhas
