Sadness/Tristeza

Nota: Versão portuguesa mais abaixo.

Today I went to high school to run a session with a 9th grade class. The activity is part of a program we’ve designed and called “I am”. “I am” was created in an attempt to respond to a need felt by the teachers in regards to some classes/teens behaviour in school, at it consists in our team meeting this classes once a week and run non formal workshops to explore soft skills, increase motivation and self and social awareness.

The exercise for today was quite simple. Each student received a blank piece of paper in which they were challenged to write one thing that they didn’t think the other people in the room would know about them. The fact had to be true and they were informed that it should be something they’d feel comfortable in sharing, because even though the papers weren’t signed, the next step was to shuffle all the papers together and then read them out loud one by one and try to guess who it belong to.

After an initial natural blockage and some suggestions, everyone managed to write down a personal fact.

As we started sharing them it was easy to see how some people had made a conscious choice to keep things fairly light while others seemed confortable sharing something more unique or unpredictable about themselves… interestedly enough it was the quietest boy in the room who surprised everyone. His fact was “Sadness, feel it without expressing it”. He was shy and he could barely look me (or the others) in the eye, but his paper was the one that took the exercise to another level. Out of 30 papers, his fact was the one the rest of the class remembered when we got to the end, and it was his sentence that changed the mood of the conversation and got the other students to actually share something deep and personal and talk about emotions.

As the rest of the group passionately weighted in on the sadness and its relevance and the pros and cons of expressing it, the boy remained quiet, but he didn’t had to say anything else, because the bravery he showed by sharing his truth had already made a great impact on his colleagues. His honesty, despite his discomfort, created a learning opportunity for the class, and the respect the others showed for his confession for sure had a positive impact on him too.

This is the magic of non-formal education.

Before we started working with this class, we were told that the situation was so bad that teachers were self-medicating before entering the classroom, and there’s a big chance they still feel the chance to do that… because we don’t have magic wands and we don’t have all the answers, but watching the interactions that happened in this classroom today tells me that we are definitely on the right path. We need to think out of the box, we need to listen to their needs, we need to get them emotionally involved… then they’ll learn.
