“You live alone, for the others, when you should learn how to live with them”
Márcia Costa [2011]

You were taught to do the right thing, to be polite, to put others first and protect the things you love. You were raised to be a good man in the storm. You convinced yourself that’s what they need you to be, always. Maybe it’s because you have a predisposition to martyr yourself, or maybe you just need to believe you have a reason to be here, but how realistic is that? How true, even?
You have this obsession with fixing things, fixing people, simply because you can't fix yourself. You put others first not because you are selfless, but so you don't have to focus on your own issues. You do it because it makes you feel good about yourself. But if you always put others first, in the end, where do you even stand?
In the long run, if you refuse to satisfy or even acknowledge your own needs, how can you be expected to be satisfy others’?
It’s actually dishonest and hypocritical, it’s unfair. That you don’t give people the opportunity to even try and do the same thing for you. You preach about the importance of trust and openness while you’re the queen of isolation land. You are always there, but you always keep at arm’s length. You always have one foot out the door, you don’t get too involved, too attached, because when things get real, that’s when people get hurt.
You care about people, no matter how long you've been trying to convince yourself that you don't. Despite all your efforts to be self-sufficient.
You’ve always been surrounded by people, loads of them, people that care about you just as much as you care about them. You’ve never been alone, not once in your lifetime, and yet the loneliness you feel inside is almost constant. You know that you’re not supposed to do it alone, that you don’t have to do it alone, that it takes a village, and you’re lucky enough to have one, you just haven’t figured out how to rely on it yet.
You share spaces and memories with the people around you, but you don't live with them. You have your own secluded life.  You've set yourself apart. You've been trying to keep the storm away for so long, that you forgot how to let people in.

Distanciaste-te do mundo.

"There is no rest for the creative mind"
Annee Tromp [2012]

This is part of a series of posts inspired by real life people around me that at some point touched me with their words. For more information on this project click here

As a child, I always played movies in mind when I was trying to fall asleep. In general I daydreamed the whole time, but at night it was a sacred ritual. It all started as a defense mechanism, because I used to have so many nightmares. So I learned that if I chose the “movie” I wanted to play in my head before falling asleep it was easier to avoid bad dreams.
It was as if I’d popped a tape into my VCR (yes, I’m that old), actually that was exactly what I used to tell my mother “the tape is on”, and then basically I’d mentally watch as much as I could before drifting off to sleep.
The stories started simple, but over the years they became more and more complex. The characters would occasionally be replaced, but a lot of them carried on for years, becoming my loyal friends.  I can’t pinpoint exactly when this started, but the oldest stories I can remember are from when I was in first/second grade. I don’t have nightmares anymore, but I’m still a terrible sleeper, and to this day, this is the only way I can fall asleep.
I've always thought that I had an overactive mind, everything serves as inspiration, never a resting moment. Most times it makes life more interesting, it doesn’t matter if I’m waiting for the bus or having a long walk, inside my head there’s never a dull moment. I can observe people for hours, just imagining who they are, what they do, how they are feeling. My creativity allows me to have imaginary friends that never leave my side, and thoughts of change and hope for better and more interesting days.
They say that creative people are different, that they see the world from a different perspective, but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Sure it’s nice to be able to retreat to the safe place in your head whenever you need, but daydreaming to this degree means you are never 100% anywhere. There’s always a part of you that is left there, in your parallel universe. You often get lost in time and space, you just shut off. It’s not always intentional or visible, but when the ideas start flowing nothing else really matters. Inspiration can come at anytime, anywhere, and when it arrives you just can't ignore it. You also get bored easily, you try not to, you know life can’t be exciting all the time, but your mind needs to be constantly stimulated. You try not to lose interest, you try to keep paying attention and eventually you notice that you were trying so hard to focus, that you lost whatever was happening entirely.
I just can’t keep the thoughts from coming in… which is probably why I can’t sleep. I’m often told that I need to lose control. Like it’s that simple, like it's a switch you can just turn on or off. Maybe for some people it is, but not when you have a creative mind constantly shouting 10.000 things that could go wrong if you do. When your mind runs 200 miles/hour everything has to be planned, there’s no room for spontaneity. When every delay’s a reason to jump to the worst possible scenarios, you second guess every move, analyze every feeling, read into every single action.
It’s very demanding, exhausting even, I get overstimulated quite often, when there’s too many people, too much noise… There’s always too much going on in my brain, but I can’t control that, because how do you run from things that are inside your head?
It’s a love/hate relationship. There are moments I just want to shut it all down, give it a rest, for once take a break, but at the same time I don’t think I could live without it. Because, as a child I might have daydreamed to avoid nightmares, but as I grew up the stories in my head became vital to cope with the things I couldn’t deal in real life.

“Não há descanso para as mentes criativas”
Annee Tromp [2012]

"...I would like to mature my youth without ever losing the innocence of a child"

This is part of a series of posts inspired by real life people around me that at some point touched me with their words. For more information on this project click here

The day started like any other. In the calendar nothing that anticipated something out of the ordinary. I woke up and followed my routine. I remember leaving the house thinking “One more day, less than two weeks to go”. I wasn't having a bad day, I wasn't particularly tired, but I wasn't drunk on excitement either. It was just supposed to be a normal day.
They were already waiting for us when we arrived, sitting quietly, their little eyes fixed on us the moment we walked through the door. It was just supposed to be a normal day, but then the activities started and they came… the children.
It was just supposed to be a normal day… and then I felt it, something inside. At first it was brief, barely noticeable, so I ignored it, but then it happened again… and again. A chill going through my body, a warm feeling inside.
I felt it when they wrapped their tiny arms around my thighs. I felt it when I kissed better the boo-boo on his finger, I felt it when I picked her up in my arms, when she cuddle close and hers tears stopped.
I forget important things sometimes. Sometimes I do get lost in my own head and my goals. Somedays I can’t seem to remember why I do what I do.  But then days like this happen, and it all comes back to me. And it’s such a cliché, I know it is, and I’m not painting the perfect picture, because it’s hard work, it’s not always easy, they are not always warm… but when they are, when it works… nothing compares. And I forget it sometimes, I don’t know how because it feels so right, but I do.
It’s one of the things I fear with this lifestyle… that I grow colder, unattached. I’m not the warmest person to start with and the jumping around… I know that for some people doesn’t really matter, that they do it for the fun of the activities, but for me the individual connection is important. I don’t want to get to a point where everything becomes so old that I don’t even see the kids anymore. I want to see them! I need to see them!
I need them to remind me of the times when laugh came easily, magic doors could transport me anywhere and miraculous hugs made the monsters under the bed go away.
I don’t wish I could go back in time, I don’t want to unlive. I’ve learned so much along the way, maturity does help to cope with a simultaneity of emotions, so I can’t regret that… but somehow I wish I could keep the same innocence.
I miss being unafraid, living in the moment. I miss being able to believe that love never dies, I miss being able to believe I can run the world, I miss being able to believe in imaginary friends, I miss being able to… just believe.

Acordei e segui a minha rotina.

“I remember you”

The journey is long and full of uncertainties. I’ve successfully avoided thinking about it for the most part, but as the moment of truth becomes more evident, it gets harder to push the fears away.
I’m sitting still in the plane, nowhere to run, my body motionless in the outside, but inside a turmoil of emotions so big that I fear I may physically break. They say the body doesn't know the difference between nerves and excitement, and at this point I agree because I’m not sure which one I’m feeling. Whatever it is, it’s accompanied by a strong feeling of anxiety that leaks from every pore of my skin.
The plane lands and the drive that awaits me is not long. With every minute I’m closer, part of me just wants to get there, straight to the point, but my other half wants to drag it a for little longer, before reality takes over and crushes my hopes.
I smile to the world, always good at keeping it all in. I laugh along with the others, make easy conversation. I try to convince myself that it doesn’t really matter. That whatever happens I can’t let it change the memories we’ve built.  I rationalize that they’re too young anyways. I know that, I understand.
I look outside the window, the landscapes I remember all too well, preparing myself for the fact that everything might have changed. But there’s not enough time, because suddenly I am there.
I remain steady as I enter, a confidence I am faking, and two pairs of brown eyes stare back at me. You come closer...and I stand still, petrified, scared of what you might say… the voice inside my head mumbling “It doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter”… after a second that seems like an hour the corners of your lips start to curl into a smile and then I hear the words I didn’t know I needed… “I remember you!”
Something hits me deep inside, I’m flooded by something I can’t describe – relief, joy… love! You repeat it again and again, “I remember you”, like you can read me, like you know just how much I need it, and it’s music to my hears, because it matters, of course it matters.
In that moment the world around us stops, there’s no-one else but us. I’ve missed you, I know I have… like I never thought I could. And maybe all the fear and pain was worth it, because I’ve never felt it much before, but I’m pretty sure that what I’m feeling right now is pure and utter happiness.

“You are young and you have the world at your fingertips, be patient”
Stephanie Maxwell [2013]

This is part of a series of posts inspired by real life people around me that at some point touched me with their words. For more information on this project click here

When we are young we all have an ideal life in our minds, but life happens and things change… even more importantly, you change. You are not the person you used to be 10, 20 years ago. However, even if you know that the ideals you had set up for you before wouldn’t satisfy you anymore, still sometimes you wonder where you are headed for.
We are eager for quick results, we focus so much on the finishing line that we often forget to enjoy the journey. We keep dragging ourselves from one challenge to the next and pushing ourselves down for all the things we’ve yet to achieve, instead of seeing how much we have grown.
It’s not always about the final result. The final result sometimes sucks. Regardless how hard you try, how good you were, there are things you can’t control and sometimes things just end on a bad note.  And it sucks, it really does. It hurts and it’s not fair, but that is life. There will always be moments in life that you’ll feel cheated on, things you don't want to happen but have to accept, but if you take something from it, if you learn from the experience, then at least it won’t have been in vain. It doesn’t feel very helpful at the moment, it’s not very comforting, I know, but believing you can use it to become better, giving it a meaning, that’s what will help you move forward.
You can’t waste the journey, you must use it correctly, and that requires taking credit for all your past experiences, big or small, successful or not.
Life is an amazing and unique experience, always, but it can be even more than this. If you truly open your mind and allow yourself to enjoy the ride and everything that it brings, it can be much more than just a nice set of memories, it will be a part of who you are. Final results may be rewarding, but the journey is what make us who we are.
Life is a journey and there’s no predicting the outcome. The moment you realize that, the moment you stop wondering and start believing that you are exactly where you are supposed to be, the moment you start enjoying the ride and taking as much from it as you can, you will finally start living.

"With so many that settle in this life (...) it’s refreshing to see the courage of those who chase after happiness and a purpose in life"
Tânia Peseiro [2015]

She walks around town without a clear destination. She has this episodes sometimes, moments when she feels trapped in her own home and she just has to take off. Truth to be said, she feels trapped in her own head, but there’s not much she can do about that.
There was a time she’d let herself be consumed by the dark voices in her head, now for most part she fights them. She doesn’t always win, far from it, but she fights.
She doesn’t find excuses or blame others like she used to. She doesn’t get angry at the world anymore, she even stopped crying for the most part. She learned it a long time ago - there’s nothing easy about life.  It took her a while, it was a brutal lesson, but she learned. She even accepted that she might never be happy, that maybe she just doesn’t have it in her, so she makes a conscious effort to take all the joy she can from the moments she has. She found strategies to remind herself of those moments, tools to keep her at bay when her mind starts to drift, but there are still moments that she’s far too gone, lost from everyone, all strength drained out of her, not an ounce of fight left in her body. And she knows, she knows she’s not supposed to back down, she’s not supposed to give up, but some days she just feels so tired… she just doesn’t want to fight for it anymore.
The world keeps spinning, people pass by her, thoughts run through her mind faster than she could ever process and she’s just standing there, immobile. She can physically feel it, her body crunching in as if her ribs are trying to protect her heart. So she takes a step back and runs out the door. She forces herself to take deep breaths, let the fresh air expand her lungs. Somehow being out in the open seems to increase the space inside her head.
Nobody said it was easy,  the journey is long, and uncertainty creeps from every corner, she knows she brings this to herself, she could just settle, keep her head down, follow the easy road as so many do. They seem happy, most of them do. Why does she always have to be an overachiever?
Sometimes in the darkness of the night she tries to convince herself she doesn’t need all that, that she could just let go of her childish dreams and accept what she has, but she can’t. She just can’t.
People think she’s brave for trying, they’ve told her so, they’ve told her how proud they are of her journey, but this isn’t about bravery or perseverance, this is about survival. It’s hard, it’s so hard. But what option does she have? It’s hard enough to live this life when you have a purpose, if you let go the only reason you have to keep on trying, what do you have left? If she doesn’t believe what she does matters, if she doesn’t believe she can make a difference, how is she supposed to keep on going?
She owes it to herself to be honest and keep dreaming, after all, if she's going to be here, she better make the best of it.  So no matter how many times she runs out she always comes back reminding herself why she has to dream… Always! Because that’s the only thing they can never take away from her.

Eles parecem felizes, a maioria parece.

I’m a sceptic. I’m not one to believe in fate, higher powers or meant to be.
I don’t assert that I know everything that is out there, it is just very hard for me to believe in a greater good with everything I see in the world. Maybe there is a God, and maybe there is a twisted logic for everything that happens, but I find it very hard to believe it and still justify the massacres, the pain, and the deaths we see every day.
I’m not against faith or religion, au contraire, I actually envy people that believe, that manage to find strength in something so abstract. It must feel good to have some certainties, something that helps them carry on through the tough times. I guess I’m just a very rational person, I need tangible proof, I need to see it to believe it.
The other thing I have trouble with is, if there’s a higher power, if our destiny is already aligned, then what is the impact of the choices we make? Or there isn’t one?
I do agree that there are things in life we can’t control, but I need to believe that what I do day in and day out matters, I need to believe that I can influence the direction of my destiny, that the choices I make shape my future, or it makes it very difficult to try harder, be better.
It’s hard for me to believe, in general. But if I have to believe in anything, then I choose to believe in people. Beings that I can reach, who can touch me. For me, with each choice you create your life, so if I have to believe in anything, then I want to believe that people are good because they choose to make good and not because some higher power makes them do it.
I may not believe that some God sent someone my way, or put me in a challenging situation to test me or make me stronger, but I do believe we can use whatever comes our way to become better people. Maybe it’s because I need to look at everything as a lesson, but I do believe that there’s a reason why people come into our lives, I just believe that the impact that person has in our life has more to do with the choices we both make than some pre-existing plan.
Everyone you cross paths with can bring something you can learn, you just need to be open, attentive and follow your instincts. We are draw to certain people, for whatever reasons, and those are usually the ones who help us most to grow, if we let them, and we help them in return.
We are so self-centered that we usually only focus on what people can bring us, without even contemplating what we have to offer too. But to help someone get a step closer to what they want to be, to help them come out of their shells, to help bring out a new and hopeful life – that is privilege – and not only is that an amazing feeling, that is one of the best lessons one can learn. We are not in this world alone and what we do for others remains forever.

“It’s funny (and wonderful) how an unfortunate incident caused us to meet great friends/Nice to know that even in tough times we can find nice people willing to help each other and keep each other safe and laughing along the way!"

We like to believe that we have life figured out. We think, we prepare, we decide. Whether because we are pretentious and actually think we have control or because we’re too scared to admit that it can all be taken away from us in a blink of an eye. The fact is that we need to feel in charge, so we plan. We plan everything, where we’re going, how we’re getting there, who we’re going to be. It make us feel safe inside. It assure us that if we stick to the plan, everything will be alright.
The thing about plans though… is they don't contemplate the unexpected. Sometimes you do everything right, everything exactly right, and still the plan fails. Because even the best plan can go wrong, and in the end no matter how hard you plan, life just… happens.
It’s daunting to watch your plans fall apart right in front of your eyes, there’s a sense of loss. For a moment you don’t know what to do next and that’s normal. However, having a plan that failed doesn’t mean that you have failed, how you deal in the face of change is what will determine the result of that event.
Sometimes in life the best outcomes come from shaky beginnings. So it’s up to you to remain open to all possibilities because "even in the worst days there's a possibility for joy"1. And it might not magically happen, it probably won’t magically happen, you might need to actively make it better. There is a choice, you can choose to freak out and be resentful, or you can choose to be gracious and helpful, treat people with kindness and respect. Maybe it won’t help much to ease your fears at that moment, but who knows you might be able to make someone feel better. And if you can do it for them, someone might just be able to the same for you. No-one is expecting you to save the world, sometimes all we need is a smile and a hand to hold.
Plans are important, but there’s only so much you can control. There are always unexpected circumstances and sometimes things need to get worse before they can get better.
It is scary, but that unpredictability is what makes life interesting, what gives us stories to share and laugh about for years on.
Plans fail, but where there is room for unpredictable tragedy there is room for serendipity too, and who knows what nice surprises the new path might bring?
I’m a planner, and a good one, but sometimes I need to remind myself that the most significant events in my life only happened because the plan failed, and that if everything had happened as I wanted to, I wouldn’t have met half the amazing people I now do.

Gostamos de acreditar que percebemos a vida. Pensamos, preparamos, decidimos.

“Perfection is unreachable but still we try”
BB Kangaroo Team [2011]

This is part of a series of posts inspired by real life people around me that at some point touched me with their words. For more information on this project click here

Everyone would like to live a life that inspire others, but not everyone can. And truth is, you shouldn’t even try.
We go around trying to please people we care about, worrying about being a role model for younger generations, struggling to rise to society’s expectations, because regardless of what we say, we do care about what others think, we do have a strong desire for validation.
We live in a world where from the moment we wake up we are surrounded by subliminal messages that promote perfection. There is this pressure to be the prettiest, the smartest, the best. We develop unrealistic expectations about ourselves, about others, about the world. These expectations distort our opinions and stimulate disappointment, because when all you expect is perfection, nothing else is ever satisfying.
This strive for perfection comes more naturally for some of us, and it’s intensified by our experiences. The more we achieve the more we aim for, and the bigger the risks the bigger is the chance to fall. That’s not necessarily bad, as long as we learn how to cope with failure.
I’ve always felt that the worst thing anyone can do to me, is to believe that I’m better than I really am. People create expectations based on your behaviors, and without even noticing it the pressure they put on your shoulders eventually starts to suffocate you. And it should feel good, it should be a good thing, that people believe you're that special, and it is, to some degree it is, but with the weight of the world on your shoulders the stakes are higher and every decision is second guessed.
We can blame our families or society for this feeling of in satisfaction, for never feeling like we are enough, but more often than not, the pressure comes from inside. We are our own worst enemies, we are the ones establishing unrealistic goals, we are the ones being too hard on ourselves for simple mistakes, we are the ones making it unfair.
I'm not saying we shouldn't work to become our better selves every day, or that we should settle. I'm a strong believer that by stretching our comfort zone, we can go further than we ever imagined, but that's a hard road to take and should we decide to take it we need to be prepared to handle the burdens that will tag along with it. More importantly, we need to be clear about who we are doing it for.
There's nothing wrong about reaching for perfection, true that not everyone can handle it, but that's what has been pushing us forward for years. However, if you're going to put yourself through it, the least you can do is do it for yourself. Don't try to fulfill other people's ideals, find a life makes you feel good about yourself, that is meaningful for you. Be honest, be fair, and take credit for the small victories. If you inspire yourself, the rest will come naturally.

“A perfeição é inalcançável, mas ainda assim tentamos”
BB Kangaroo Team [2011]

“They’re not my friends, they’re my colleagues”
Francisca Ferreira [2005]

This is part of a series of posts inspired by real life people around me that at some point touched me with their words. For more information on this project click here.

I’ve always dwelled on a lot about the topic - friendship. For as long as I can remember I’ve been curious about the dynamics inherent to all kinds of relationships.
We grow up surrounded by this concept. From early on there’s an invisible pressure to create friendships, fast and easy. As soon as you enter nursery school immediately the other children are named your “little friends”, as if being the same age, sharing a space, would magically create a bond between two people.
As we go through life and we gain more control, this friendship pool may narrow a little, but still quite often we misuse this term. It’s not that we don’t know its meaning, we do, I really think we do, but for some reason we over use it.
Friendship implies affection, care and attention. A friend is someone who is there, always, even when things get tough, even when you may be wrong, even when you fail. Friend is the person you share your best memories with, with whom you laugh until you cheeks hurt, the one you can talk with until dawn.
Friendship is what helps you carry through the hard times and life’s lessons. It demands showing up, day after day, struggle after struggle, in whatever way needed. But above all things friendship requires time and commitment.
The beauty of it is that in order to be real it entails reciprocity. You can’t befriend another person alone. No matter how much you care about them, for it to be friendship, you need to have someone to bounce these feelings off with.
To have a true friend is to have something incredibly special in your life, but the word has become so trivial that it almost lost its meaning.
I don’t know if we do it because we want to be polite, because we can’t be bothered, because we are too lazy to establish the difference or if we’re just afraid to realize how small our number of friends really is, but the frequency that we use it makes it fragile, and that’s scary, because friends are supposed to be your rock.
Friendship is not something you just walk away from, you can’t throw it out when it’s not convenient. If you can simply bail when it gets hard, then it couldn’t possibly have been real. It should never feel easy to walk away from a friend, to replace them, because truth is you can never replace a friend. People change, things happens, life gets in the way. You will lose some friends, inevitably, and you will make new ones, hopefully, but friends never get replaced, because when friendship is real, even if people grow apart, there’s something that stays with them, for good.
So when we open the spectrum too wide and include everyone around us in what should be a very selective group, all we are doing is deceiving ourselves.
So it’s not rude to say that someone around you is not you friend, but a colleague, a teammate, an acquainted, rude is to put someone that will support you without limits, that make you smile wide and with whom you share all of you, in the same package with people with whom you can occasionally just have a goodtime with.

Curious Fact: Francisca was only 6/7 years old when she said the quote above.

“Não são meus amigos, são meus colegas”
Francisca Ferreira [2005]

Desde sempre as dinâmicas inerentes a qualquer relação me despertaram curiosidade.
As pessoas crescem, as coisas mudam, a vida acontece.

Be Inspired

Nota: Versão portuguesa mais abaixo

Sometimes your experiences are not enough, and that's okay, so long that you keep yourself surrounded by people that inspire you.
I don’t always talk much about what truly matters. Partly because I suck at it, partly because I’m painfully aware of the strength words have. I know once said words can’t be taken back, and I’m always worried I’ll waste them.
I’m a hoarder.  Words are important for me, so I save them all. I have lists of words that for some reason make me smile, I scribble down thoughts in every piece of paper I get, and my dreams are filled with words and quotes I can’t forget.
Words are my escape so I remember them. They are what pull me through the worst days, so I hold on to them.
We speak so much and yet we are often oblivious to the impact our words have in others. Even more often we are only confronted with that impact when we hurt them. But we shouldn’t. We should be made aware of when our words hurt someone, but we should also be aware of when they touch them.
I don’t always talk much, but I listen more than you realize and that stays with me, forever.
So the challenge for the next weeks is to  share posts that were inspired by people around me - teachers, friends, family, teammates, real people. People like you and me, that without even realizing it, have said something that for one reason or another stayed with me. Because it may not look like it, but I’m listening, I’m always listening. Starts tomorrow #beinspired.

 ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Eu estou sempre a ouvir. Começa amanhã #beinspired.

Something right / Algo certo

Nota: Versão portuguesa mais abaixo.

It’s not easy, you don’t always feel comfortable, there are challenges and sacrifices, things you leave behind, others you fear to lose. There are doubts every single time you jump in another plane. There’s exhaustion and frustration. There’s no novelty anymore and there’s that need to continue improving… moving.
But when even the grumpy teacher surrenders and it’s begging you to visit her classes, openly sad to hear that you’re leaving. When the director people respect and fear stops in the middle of the library to hug and celebrate your return, and the rest of the staff that is culturally quiet and submissive greets you with fervor each time you enter the room.
When you walk around town and have teenagers shouting hello from across the street on a daily basis. When you are out shopping and have a random person that you can only imagine it’s a parent smiling at you. When kids that don’t speak any English see you in the park and without restrains abandon their parents to bring their friends to meet you and play with you. Names that you don’t always remember, but faces you won’t forget…
Without a doubt, there are a lot of external circumstances contributing for this success, you’re aware of that, but when you feel all of the above, there’s no way you can’t take credit for it, there’s no way you can’t stop and think “I most have done something right!”.

Algo Certo
